Weber School District has updated its Student Electronic Device Policy (Policy 8350) to help protect instructional time and create a safe, respectful, and focused learning environment.
When Can Students Use Their Devices?
Secondary students may use personal electronic devices:
Before and after school
During transition/passing periods
During lunch
During class time, personal electronic devices should be out of sight and on silent mode. Headphones, earbuds, and AirPods may not be worn during prohibited times. Smartwatches may be worn, but applications on the watch may not be used. Electronic devices are also prohibited in locker rooms and restrooms.
Responsible & Safe Use
Students may not use electronic devices to bully or harass others, cheat, disrupt the learning environment, invade another person's privacy, or access inappropriate content. Recording someone without their consent is prohibited, and students may not film fights, assaults, or other physical altercations at school or school-related events.
What Happens if the Policy Is Violated?
The district uses progressive consequences for device violations. These may begin with a teacher redirect or reminder and progress to having the device held until the end of class, the end of the school day, or until a parent/guardian picks it up. Repeated violations may result in additional disciplinary action.
Exceptions may be made for students with an IEP, Section 504 Plan, or Health Care Plan, and teachers may request limited instructional use of personal devices with administrator permission. Students will also receive instructions from teachers or administrators regarding device use during an emergency.
We appreciate the support of our students and families as we work together to protect instructional time and create a positive learning environment.
